Backyard Archery

Tedious Introduction

After about 20 years worth of vacillation I finally went to my local archery store and bought myself some decent gear with which to learn archery.

The Equipment

My bow, arrows, and home-made target butt.

The other side of the bow.

The back of the target butt.

The target butt is made from an old futon mattress, with a layer of carpet on the top. A second layer of carpet inside the fold would probably be a good idea.

I made a bow case from canvas. It has pockets on the front to carry the quiver and accessories.
I prefer the look of a recurve to a compound bow, so that's what I bought. Unfortunately I told the bloke at the shop that my long-range intention was to go bow hunting, and he recommended that rather than start with a beginner's bow in the 35 pound range that I should buy this 55 pound monster. It kills my arms, but it's very nice to look at.

The package consisted of the bow, six carbon arrows, a belt quiver, a bow stringer, an armguard and a finger tab, for about $380. I've had it for about 3 weeks now, and my strength and accuracy are improving. Still a long way to go before I reach Robin Hood status though.

Here's a link to some video of my efforts. I'm getting better! ;-)
