Tree Watering

This little fella lives in amongs my picks and shovels. Now that I no longer have a cat he's looking forward to a long and happy life.

The watering rig. The lawnmower is a 2-cylinder water-cooled Honda with engine problems that was bought from eBay for $200. It cost 2 welding rods, some scrap steel and about 6 hours labour to fix. The trailer is made from a heavy-duty baggage trolley and some more scrap steel. The 200 litre drum originally contained coin blanks for the Royal australian Mint.

The job has become a lot easier now that I have a pump (another $200 eBay purchase). It will fill the tank in 2 minutes, before it required 7 trips into the dam with a pair of 20-litre buckets.

Just so you get some idea of the size of the dam. It's about 4 metres deep in the middle.

Looking from about the half-way point down the line. There are two lines of trees, spaced about 3 metres apart, over a 500 metre fenceline.

After 3 years of unstaisfactory results from Radiata Pine, this year I'm experimenting with Poplars. The cuttings were free, and they're quick to plant.

The hose gets dragged behind the tank. Now that I've added the extra length of hose (the black piece) I can water 24 trees before I need to move the tanker forward again.

Glug glug glug...

Close up of the towing hitch on the tractor. I really need to replace those tiny 1/4" bolts with something stronger, but they seem to be holding up so far.
